If this is your first time in Porto, then this walk is the perfect way to get to know the city. This is the main medieval route which covers the main sights and the most beautiful places of the city.
All you need is comfortable shoes, a couple hours of free time and curiosity!

We will start our meeting with the city like real Porto residents: with the cup of coffee and pastel de nata pastry. Let’s get to know each other and have a bit of food, as today we will see:

Clérigos Tower - Se Cathedral - the oldest square Largo da Pena Ventosa - the oldest house of the 13th century - Ribeira embankment - St. Francis Cathedral - King Luis I Bridge.

You will find out what role Porto played in the formation of the country, how it got richer, why it is called Invicta and what we owe to it today!

The remains of the medieval city, intimate quiet streets of the 14^th century, luxurious cathedrals, a noisy embankment and, of course, a modern and dynamic view of the city in the 21 century – all this is Porto, counting 2000 years of history!

Like all ancient cities, Porto is built on hills, but we will avoid exhausting climbs and crowds of tourists during our walk.

We go to the first capital of Portugal – Guimarães city. It is believed that the first king, Afonso Henriques, was born here. The rich history of the city is reflected in the city’s many attractions: a majestic gothic monastery, a fortified castle and an elegant 15^th-century palace.

Filled with history, we will visit Braga, the “episcopal” capital of Portugal. We will find out how the country was created from the times of Romans to the present day, and we will visit the Cathedral, which is older than Portugal itself.

After that, we will go to a majestic Bom Jesus do Monte complex with one of the most impressive staircases in Europe. Lovers of beautiful photos, get ready!

If you like getting most of the tours and value your time, then this walk is the perfect way to see the main sights and to literally “taste Porto”. We will study the histry of the sity in its most iconic places, finishing our time travel in one of the wine cellars of Villa Nova De Gaia, where we will taste different types of wines and ports, discussing what we saw and heard.

Однажды вестготский король Родригу, охотившийся в той местности, гнался за оленем. Погода была скверная, видимость почти нулевая. В надвигающемся тумане король не заметил, как погоня привела его к краю обрыва, куда, как ему показалось, спрыгнул олень, и куда его лошадь готова была ринуться вслед… Король в ужасе стал молиться деве Марии о спасении своей души, ну и тела, разумеется. Как только он произнес последние слова, лошадь его тут же остановилась, буквально в сантиметрах от пропасти. В благодарность за спасение король повелел установить часовню, которая стоит до сих пор. Было это в 8м веке. Но что самое удивительное, в 11 веке в монастыре поблизости нашли письменные подтверждения этой легенде. Хотите верьте, хотите нет. Из числа паломников к этому месту и вырос Назаре.

Ну а мы идем дальше к знаменитому споту, откуда весь мир наблюдает за отчаянными покорителями волн, а волны здесь действительно могут достигать 30 метров - это, на минуточку, высота 10этажного дома.

Впечатлившись красотами природы, мы едем дальше восхищаться красотами рукотворными. По пути узнаем, почему монастырь Баталья так важен для португальской истории. Прибыв на место, прогуляемся по коридорам монастыря, его внутренним дворикам, называемыми клуатрами, узнаем больше о типичном для Португалии архитектурном стиле мануэлино и рассмотрим Незавершенные Капеллы – уникальное место с потрясающей энергетикой. Кстати, монастырь – это не только то место, где жили монахи. Это, так сказать, средневековое градообразующее предприятие, целый город, который обеспечивал себя сам и кормил соседние деревни. А еще это хранилище знаний: монахи занимались созданием, переписыванием и переводами рукописей, а впоследствии печатали книги. Так что те знания, которыми мы располагаем о прошлых веках, дошли до нас благодаря таким монастырям и их обитателям.

Once, the Visigothic king Rodrigo, who was hunting in that area, was chasing a deer. The weather was bad, visibility was almost zero. In the approaching fog, the king did not notice how the chase led him to the edge of a cliff, where, as he thought, a deer had jumped, and where his horse was ready to rush... The king, in horror, began to pray to the Virgin Mary for the salvation of his soul, and, of course, his body. As soon as he uttered the last words, his horse immediately stopped, literally centimetres from the abyss. In gratitude for the rescue, the king ordered the installation of a chapel, which still stands. This was in the 8th century. However, what is most surprising is that in the 11th century, written confirmation of this legend was found in a monastery nearby. Believe it or not. Among the pilgrims of this place, Nazaré grew up.

Well, we move on to the famous spot, from where the whole world watches the desperate wave conquerors, and the waves here can reach 30 meters - this, for a minute, is the height of a 10-floor building.

Having been impressed by the beauties of nature, we go on to admire man-made beauties. Along the way we will learn why the Batalha Monastery is so important to Portuguese history. Having arrived at the place, we will walk along the corridors of the monastery, its courtyards, called cloisters, learn more about the Manueline architectural style typical to Portugal and look at the Unfinished Chapels - a unique place with amazing energy. Moreover, a monastery is not only the place where the monks lived. This is, so to say, a medieval city-forming enterprise, an entire town that provided for itself and fed neighbouring villages. It is also a storage of knowledge: the monks were engaged in the creation, rewriting and translation of manuscripts, and subsequently published books. Hence the knowledge that we have about past centuries has come to us thanks to such monasteries and their inhabitants.

First, what is bacalhau? This is not the Portuguese name for cod, as you might think. This is a method of salting and drying fish, which has been known since Viking times. It was this method that allowed sailors to sail far beyond the 7 seas, as they desperately needed provisions that could be stored for many months.

It is said that the Age of Discovery, when Portugal gradually became the first maritime empire in the world, would not have happened if the Portuguese had not discovered bacalhau in the first place.

We will follow the footsteps of great sailors and learn more about Portugal’s fishing industry. If you wish, we can take a ride on one of the traditional boats in the city, which is called the Portuguese Venice for the similarity of the canals and the large number of “gondoliers”.

Then we will move to the ocean shore, where, if you wish, you can try octopus - one of the best in Portugal! After lunch we will take a walk along the famous striped houses on the coast. Do you want spectacular photos? They are guaranteed!
